Greymouth - Mawheranui is a 501,382 ha Ordinary block covering the central West Coast from Victoria Forest Park through the Ahaura and Lake Brunner catchments down to Lewis Pass. Elevations run from sea level to 1,966 m on the tops, with a median around 608 m.
The block is mostly bush and foothill country — about 10% sits above the 1,200 m bushline. The dominant aspect is west, into the prevailing weather. Beech forest, river flats and the long ranges of Victoria Forest Park dominate.
It carries red deer, fallow deer, wapiti, tahr, chamois, wild goat and wild pig. It's a wide species mix across a very large area of public land.

Access & getting there
Air access is permitted, which suits hunters working into Lake Morgan, the upper Crooked or the Ahaura headwaters. WARO is also permitted on the block.
The block is well served by huts. Bookable options include Kirwans Hut, Cannibal Gorge Hut, Ada Pass Hut and Big River Hut. Non-bookable backcountry huts are scattered throughout — Montgomerie, Slaty Creek, Cone Creek, Lake Stream, Elizabeth, Top Crooked, Lake Morgan, Waikiti, Top Robinson, Wheel Creek, Lake Christabel, Mid Trent, Camp Creek, Jim's Flat, Mid Robinson, Pell Stream, Top Waitahu Bivvy, Jacko Flat, Mt Curtis, Top Trent/Lagoon, Tutaekuri and Lyell Saddle Hut. Marble Hill and Slab Hut Creek campsites also fall inside the block.
