02 - Hackett River

Balloted Roar block4,445 haPermit: Permitted

Block 02 - Hackett River is a 4,445 ha balloted roar block in the South Westland - Weheka permit area, sitting low on the western side of the main divide. Elevations run from sea level up to 1,037 m, with a median of 375 m and a mean of 396 m.

None of the country sits above the bushline. This is lowland and foothill forest typical of South Westland — heavy bush, river flats and bluffy spurs running down toward the coast. Slopes lean north-west on the dominant aspect, so warmer faces catch the afternoon sun.

The block carries red deer, tahr and chamois. Reds are the realistic recreational quarry through the timber here; tahr and chamois are listed for the wider permit area but the elevation profile sits well below their usual range on this block.

What you can hunt here

There are no DOC huts inside the block. Hunters will need to fly camp or carry a tent for any overnight trip.
