Puketarata Scenic Reserve
Puketarata Scenic Reserve is a very small 110 ha block in the Manawatu-Wanganui region, taken out under the Whanganui Reserves permit area. Elevations run from about 13 m up to 307 m, with a median around 140 m, so this is low-lying foothill country well below the bushline.
The block has a strong south-east lean, with about 43% of the country facing south-east and another 30% facing south. Other aspects pick up small shares. That gives a focused set of shaded south-easterly sidles, with cool feed-holding country through much of the block.
Game on the permit includes red deer, fallow deer, sambar, wild goat and wild pig. It is a small but species-rich piece of bush, with sambar in the mix.
