Ngātokoerua Scenic Reserve
Ngātokoerua Scenic Reserve is a large 11,493 ha block in the Manawatu-Wanganui region, taken out under the Ruapehu permit area. Elevations run from about 386 m up to 877 m, with a median around 719 m, so this is mid-altitude bush country sitting below the bushline across the full block.
The block has a west-and-north-west lean, with about 22% of the country facing west and 18% north-west. Easterly and north-easterly aspects pick up smaller shares. That gives a clear set of westerly sidles to focus on, with cool feed-holding country through much of the block.
Game on the permit includes red deer, fallow deer, sika, wild goat and wild pig. The block carries the full set of central North Island bush species, including sika.
