Kauhangaroa Scenic Reserve
Kauhangaroa Scenic Reserve is a small 154 ha block in the Manawatu-Wanganui region, taken out under the Taumarunui Reserves permit area. Elevations run from about 236 m up to 483 m, with a median around 351 m, so this is lowland to foothill bush country a long way below the bushline.
The block has a marked west-and-south lean, with about a quarter of the country facing west, a fifth south-west and another fifth south. Northerly faces barely feature. That gives a clear set of shaded sidles to focus on, with the catch that wind in from the north or east makes the block hard to work cleanly.
Game on the permit includes red deer, fallow deer, sika, wild goat and wild pig. It is a small but species-rich piece of bush — sika start to mix in through these Taumarunui reserves.

There are no huts or formal campsites inside the block, so plan to day-trip or fly-camp from a vehicle base.
