WNP (Pt) - Atene
WNP (Pt) - Atene is a 934 ha part of Whanganui National Park in the Manawatu-Wanganui region, taken out under the Whanganui Reserves permit area. It covers country around the Atene loop on the Whanganui River. Elevations run from about 23 m up to 552 m, with a median around 253 m, so this is lowland to mid-altitude bush country well below the bushline.
The block has a strong north-west and west lean, with about 22% of the country facing north-west, 18% west and useful shares also dropping south and north. South-easterly and easterly aspects are limited. That gives a clear set of cool, shaded westerly sidles to focus on, dropping toward the river.
Game on the permit includes red deer, fallow deer, wild goat and wild pig. Goats are commonly worked across the steep faces of the Atene country.
