Whanganui National Park (Pt)
This is the headline 44,674 ha part of Whanganui National Park, sitting in the Manawatu-Wanganui region under the Whanganui Forests permit area. It covers a large slice of the park around the Whanganui River corridor.
Elevations run from about 29 m up to 740 m, with a median around 308 m, so this is lowland to mid-altitude bush country well below the bushline. Aspects are very evenly spread, with a slight lean to east and south, which means there is workable country regardless of wind direction. This is classic Whanganui National Park bush — broken papa-bottomed gullies, river-cut sidles and bush-clad spurs dropping toward the river.
Game on the permit includes red deer, fallow deer, wild goat and wild pig. Pigs are particularly well-suited to the lowland river-corridor country.
