Waioeka Conservation Area
Waioeka Conservation Area is a major 38,221 hectare public hunting area in the Whakatane/Waioeka/Urutawa permit zone, eastern Bay of Plenty. Elevations run from 29 m at the lower edges up to 1,165 m, with a median of 566 m — predominantly bush country sitting below the bushline at most elevations.
This is the heart of the Waioeka country, with the Waioeka River system draining a major area of mixed bush. Slopes lean west on the dominant aspect, but at this scale the block holds faces on any wind. The country runs from lowland river flats up to ridges that brush close to the bushline without quite breaking out into open tops.
Game on the permit includes red deer, fallow deer, wild goat and wild pig. The Waioeka is a well-known North Island hunting destination.

What you can hunt here
Access & getting there
A network of huts inside the block supports multi-day trips, including Kotepato Hut, Kahunui Hut and Nikau Flat Hut. The area is flagged for WARO, so commercial helicopter operators may be working the wider country. Air access for recreational hunters is not flagged.
The Waioeka is reached from road ends on the Whakatane and Opotiki sides — long walks in are the norm, with the huts as bases for fly-camp setups deeper in.
