Waikareiti North Conservation Area

Ordinary7,193 haPermit: Permitted

Waikareiti North Conservation Area is a substantial 7,193-hectare block in the Whakatane / Waioeka / Urutawa permit area, lying on the northern margin of the wider Lake Waikareiti / Urewera country. Elevations run from 488 m to 1,105 m with a median of 760 m, putting the whole block in hill country country well below the bushline.

The block faces predominantly south-east, with strong south, east and north-west aspects giving a varied mix of sunny and shaded country. Expect dense tawa–podocarp and beech bush over rolling ridges and gully systems — classic Urewera-fringe country.

The block carries red deer, fallow deer, wild goat and wild pig, an unusually broad species mix in a piece of country big enough to absorb multi-day trips.
