Raukumara Conservation Park

Ordinary110,949 haPermit: Permitted

Raukumara Conservation Park is a major 110,949 hectare public hunting area in the Gisborne/Raukumara permit zone, covering the spine of the Raukumara Range between the Bay of Plenty and East Cape. Elevations run from 42 m at the lower edges up to 1,465 m on the higher tops, with a median of 670 m — predominantly bush country with a mix of bush and tops on the highest ground.

About 4% of the park sits above the 1,200 m bushline, so this is largely a timbered hunting area with a small fringe of open tops on the higher peaks. Slopes lean north on the dominant aspect, and at this size hunters can find faces on any wind.

Game on the permit includes red deer, fallow deer, wild goat and wild pig. The Raukumara is one of the wilder, less-pressured ranges in the North Island.

What you can hunt here

Access & getting there

A network of huts inside the park supports multi-day trips, including Mangaotane Hut (McMillans), Oronui Hut and Mangakirikiri Hut. The park is flagged for WARO, so commercial helicopter operators may be working the wider area. Air access for recreational hunters is not flagged.

The Raukumara is remote, rugged bush country and trips here typically involve long walks in from road ends on either the Gisborne or Bay of Plenty sides.
