Otawaki Scenic Reserve
Otawaki Scenic Reserve is a small 208 ha block in the Manawatu-Wanganui region, taken out under the Whanganui Reserves permit area. Elevations run from about 7 m up to 397 m, with a median around 185 m, so this is low-lying foothill country well below the bushline, dropping toward the Whanganui valley floor.
The block has a strong easterly lean, with about 30% of the country facing east and another 22% north-east. Westerly aspects barely feature. That gives a clear set of warm easterly sidles catching the morning sun, with the catch that easterly winds are hard to work cleanly here.
Game on the permit includes red deer, fallow deer, wild goat and wild pig. At this size it is a focused short-stalk block.
