Lizard

Ordinary3,030 haPermit: Permitted

Lizard is a 3,030-hectare ordinary block on the Molesworth Station and Clarence grazing lease, with substantial vertical relief. Elevations run from 451 m to 2,233 m with a median of just 877 m, so the bulk of the block sits low while a handful of drainages climb onto serious tops.

Twenty per cent of the block sits above the 1,200 m bushline and 11% is alpine, putting it in the mix of bush and tops bracket. The country leans south-east, with strong south-east, east and south aspects — shaded sidles that hold feed and animals on warmer days.

The permit covers red deer, chamois, wild goat and wild pig. The big vertical drop means hunters can chase pigs and goats low, reds in the bush belt and chamois up on the tops without leaving the block.

Access & getting there

Air access is not permitted on Lizard, but WARO is permitted, so commercial recovery helicopters may be active over the higher faces. Hunters work in on foot from the legal access points on the Molesworth and Clarence side.

No DOC huts sit within the block, so plan to fly camp. The vertical range means camp choice matters — pick a height that gives you sensible reach into the country you want to hunt. Carry a fly or tent and check Molesworth access status before leaving.
