Blinkers

Roar2,761 haPermit: Restricted

Blinkers is a 2,761-hectare roar block on the Molesworth Station and Clarence grazing lease, in inland Marlborough. Elevations run from 671 m to 1,671 m with a median of 1,005 m. With 28% of the country above the 1,200 m bushline, this is a mix of bush and tops weighted toward the lower bush and scrub bands.

The block leans south-facing, with strong south, south-east and south-west aspects — shaded sidles that hold feed and carry animals through the warmer parts of the day. Expect beech and scrub on the lower country grading up to tussock basins and bony ridges on the upper faces.

The permit covers red deer, chamois, wild goat and wild pig. That mix suits the country: reds in the bush edges, chamois on the rougher upper guts, and pigs and goats spread through the scrub.

What you can hunt here

This is a roar — the red deer roar peaks from late March into April, and competition for the block is highest then.

Access & getting there

Air access is permitted on Blinkers, so heli drops into the upper basins are an option for hunters who want to start high and work down. WARO is not permitted, so the country is left to walk-in and fly-camp hunters during the season.

No DOC huts sit inside the block, so plan to fly camp or work from a base outside the lease boundary. Carry a fly or tent and confirm Molesworth access status before leaving — the station road network is seasonal and access can be restricted.
