Kaumira/ Mount Nimrod
Kaumira/Mount Nimrod is an 8,456 ha public hunting block in South Canterbury, taking in the Hunter Hills country south-west of Timaru. Elevations run from 571 m to 1,589 m with a median of 1,118 m, so the bulk of the ground sits in the upper bush belt and lower tops.
At 35% above the 1,200 m bushline and only 2% above 1,500 m, this is a mix of bush and tops rather than true alpine — beech and broadleaf faces give way to tussock ridges and scrubby gullies near the top. Slopes lean predominantly west, so afternoon glassing faces light up and warm through later in the day.
The species mix is unusually broad: red deer, fallow deer, tahr, chamois, wild goat, wild pig and wallaby. For a South Canterbury block this is one of the more varied species lists on public land, with wallaby in particular being a feature of the Hunter Hills country.

Both fixed-wing and helicopter air access are permitted, although most hunters will walk in given the modest elevation and proximity to road-end country. WARO is also permitted, so commercial recovery operations may be working the same country on deer.
There are no DOC huts or campsites on the block. Hunters need to carry their own shelter and be set up for self-sufficient overnights, or work it as a series of day hunts off the surrounding road network.
