Whangae Conservation Area is a small 155 ha block in eastern Northland. Elevations run from 24 m up to 220 m with a median of 132 m, putting the entire block in low coastal foothill bush.
Aspect leans south, with strong shares also facing south-west and south-east. Cool, shaded faces hold the subtropical regenerating canopy that covers most of the block.
