Upper Acheron

Roar2,992 haPermit: Restricted

Upper Acheron is a 2,992-hectare roar block on the Molesworth Station and Clarence grazing lease, sitting in the upper reaches of the Acheron catchment. Elevations run from 845 m to 1,888 m with a median of 1,101 m — country that straddles the bushline.

Thirty-six per cent of the block sits above the 1,200 m bushline and 8% is alpine, putting it in the mix of bush and tops bracket. The country leans north-west, with strong north-west and west aspects catching afternoon sun and the prevailing nor-wester.

The permit covers red deer, chamois and wild pig. Reds and pigs work the bush-edge and scrub gullies typical of the upper Acheron country; chamois sit the bony upper ridges.
