Rangataua Conservation Area

Ordinary6,466 haPermit: Permitted

Rangataua Conservation Area is a 6,466 ha block in the Manawatu-Wanganui region, taken out under the Ruapehu permit area, on the south side of the central plateau. Elevations run from about 661 m up to 1,271 m, with a median around 900 m. About 1% of the block sits above the 1,200 m bushline, so this is almost entirely sub-alpine bush country with a thin strip of tops on the highest ridges.

The block has a strong south-and-south-west lean, with about 30% of the country facing south, 26% south-west and 19% south-east. Northerly aspects are very limited. That gives a clear set of shaded southerly sidles to focus on, with cool feed-holding country dominating.

Game on the permit includes red deer, sika and wild pig. It is central North Island sika country with reds mixing in, big bush around the southern flanks of the Ruapehu massif.
