Paengaroa Scenic Reserve
Paengaroa Scenic Reserve is a small 117 ha block in the Manawatu-Wanganui region, taken out under the Palmerston North Area Reserves permit area. Elevations run from about 519 m up to 701 m, with a median around 562 m, so it sits as mid-altitude bush country well below the bushline.
The block has a strong south-and-south-west lean, with about 30% of the country facing south, another 27% facing south-west and useful shares also dropping south-east. Northerly aspects barely feature. That gives a clear set of shaded sidles to focus on, with cool feed-holding country across most of the block.
Game on the permit includes red deer, sambar and wild goat. Sambar are the standout — these Palmerston North reserves sit within the small introduced sambar range.
