North Barlow
North Barlow is a 1,637 ha balloted Roar block in the Franz Josef - Waiau permit area. Elevations climb from 351 m on the lower edges to 2,176 m on the tops, with a median around 1,271 m.
This is predominantly alpine country — 56% of the block sits above the 1,200 m bushline and 32% pushes into ground above 1,500 m. The dominant aspect is south-west, so the main faces sit shaded and into the prevailing weather.
The block carries red deer, tahr, chamois and wild goat. The four-species mix gives hunters reds through the lower bush, tahr and chamois on the alpine faces and goats on the rocky margins.
