Mt Severn

Roar3,881 haPermit: Restricted

Mt Severn is a 3,881-hectare roar block on the Molesworth Station and Clarence grazing lease, sitting on the Severn drainage in inland Marlborough. Elevations run from 947 m to 2,010 m with a median of 1,280 m, putting the bulk of the block above the bushline.

Sixty-two per cent of the block sits above the 1,200 m bushline and 25% is alpine, so this is mostly above the bushline tops country with broad tussock faces and rocky upper basins. The country leans south-facing, with strong south, south-east and south-west aspects — long shaded sidles that hold feed through warmer days.

The permit covers red deer, chamois and wild goat. The tops country suits chamois work, reds hold the bush-edge bands and head-of-catchment basins, and goats spread through the rougher lower country.

What you can hunt here

This is a roar — the red deer roar peaks from late March into April, and competition for the block is highest then.

Access & getting there

Air access is not permitted on Mt Severn, and WARO is not permitted either, so the country is left to walk-in hunters during the roar.

Severn Hut sits inside the block. It has mattresses, a non-flush toilet and stream water — no heating listed, so plan for cold camps even with hut use. It is not bookable. The hut gives a fixed base for working the Severn faces but parties should carry a fly or tent as backup given the lack of heating and shared use.
