McGuires
McGuires is a 1,429-hectare roar block on the Molesworth Station and Clarence grazing lease, one of the smaller blocks in the system. Elevations run from 733 m to 1,680 m with a median of 1,084 m, putting the bulk of the country in the bush-and-scrub belt with the upper margins reaching toward the bushline.
Thirty-three per cent of the block sits above the 1,200 m bushline and just 3% is alpine, so this is a mix of bush and tops weighted toward the lower country. The block leans north-west, with strong north-west and west aspects — sun-catching faces and the prevailing nor-wester working the upper guts.
The permit covers red deer, chamois and wild pig. Reds and pigs work the lower bush and scrub, chamois sit the rougher upper ridges. The smaller block size means a focused hunt over manageable country.

What you can hunt here
This is a roar — the red deer roar peaks from late March into April, and competition for the block is highest then.
Access & getting there
Air access is not permitted on McGuires, and WARO is not permitted either, so the country is walked. Hunters work in from the legal access points on the Molesworth system.
No DOC huts sit within the block, so plan to fly camp or work from a base outside. The compact size of the block means a single camp can put you within reach of most of the country. Carry a fly or tent and check Molesworth access status before leaving.
