Block 44 - Lower Turnbull is a 3,033 ha balloted roar block in the South Westland - Weheka permit area, in the lower Turnbull catchment. Elevations run from 104 m on the valley floor up to 1,845 m, with a median of 611 m.

The country is a mix of bush and tops — around 16% of the block sits above the 1,200 m bushline, with a small alpine fringe above 1,500 m. Expect heavy West Coast bush on the lower faces grading into scrub, tussock and bluffy tops on the upper ridges. Slopes lean west on the dominant aspect.

The block carries red deer, tahr, chamois and wild goat. Reds work the bush and bush-edge; the upper basins and ridges give hunters a chance at tahr and chamois.

Access & getting there
