Hunting in Auckland

Auckland

Overview

The Auckland region has a small public hunting estate — five DOC blocks totalling around 12,000 hectares — but the headline destination makes up for the modest size. Great Barrier Island (Aotea) lies 90 kilometres off the Auckland coast and holds one of the most accessible island pig-hunting experiences in New Zealand. The island's Great Barrier Forest Conservation Area (8,100 ha) and Te Paparahi Conservation Area (3,400 ha) together cover a significant portion of the island's interior, with wild pigs that have been established there for generations and see comparatively little hunting pressure given the logistics of getting across.

On the mainland, the Dome Forest near Warkworth and Totara Peak Scenic Reserve are small, accessible blocks that serve local pig and goat hunters.

What You Can Hunt

  • Wild pig — the primary quarry throughout the region. Great Barrier Island is known for its pig population; the mainland blocks also hold good numbers in the regenerating scrub and second-growth bush.
  • Wild goat — present on Great Barrier Island and through the mainland coastal blocks, particularly on the exposed ridges and coastal scrub.

Where to Hunt

  • Great Barrier Forest Conservation Area — 8,100 ha covering much of the island's interior north and centre. Steep, rugged terrain with a mix of kauri, manuka, and podocarp forest. Pig throughout; goat on the open ridges. Access from Tryphena wharf via the island road network.
  • Te Paparahi Conservation Area — 3,400 ha on the eastern side of Great Barrier Island. Adjacent to the main forest block; similar terrain and species.
  • Dome Forest Conservation Area — 335 ha near Warkworth on the mainland, around the Dome summit. Pig and goat; a handy local block for hunters based north of Auckland.
  • Totara Peak Scenic Reserve — small (102 ha) reserve near the Dome; mainly pig.

Getting In

  • Ferry / light aircraft — Great Barrier Island is reached by Fullers ferry from the Auckland waterfront (4.5 hours) or by regular light-aircraft services from Ardmore or North Shore airports (30 minutes). Vehicle ferries allow taking a vehicle to the island.
  • Road (Great Barrier) — the island's road network connects Tryphena to Claris and the main settlements; most forest block entries are accessible by vehicle.
  • Road (mainland) — the Dome Forest is reached off SH 1 north of Warkworth, within 70 km of the Auckland CBD.

Seasons & Weather

Auckland has a warm, humid, sub-tropical climate with no real closed hunting season driven by weather. Pigs are huntable year-round; summer is the least comfortable due to heat and insects.

PeriodConditionsNotes
Autumn (Mar–May)Warm, some rainGood general hunting.
Winter (Jun–Aug)Mild, wettest monthsPigs active; bush hunting comfortable in cooler conditions.
Spring (Sep–Nov)Warm and dryingStrong pig activity as bush dries.
Summer (Dec–Feb)Hot, humidDawn and dusk hunting; insects heavy in the bush.

Great Barrier Island weather can be unpredictable — the island generates its own conditions independent of the Auckland forecast. Allow flexibility for ferry and flight cancellations in unsettled weather.

Gear & Conditions

Island pig hunting on Great Barrier is close-cover work — leatherwood, scrub, and regenerating kauri. A short, manoeuvrable rifle or shotgun is more practical than a long-barrelled setup. A well-equipped pig dog kit (rip-stop gear, first aid) is non-negotiable for dog hunters. The island terrain is steep and rough; good boots matter. For the mainland Dome Forest, day-trip gear is all that is needed.

Permits & Regulations

A free DOC permit is required for Great Barrier Forest Conservation Area and all other public conservation land in the region. The Great Barrier Island blocks fall under the GBI permit area. Check current pest-control operation status before taking dogs — 1080 operations on Great Barrier Island have occurred periodically and are a real consideration for dog hunters. Kauri dieback hygiene stations are present at many island forest entries — cleaning and spraying boots and gear is mandatory. Goat hunting rules are the same as on the mainland — no restrictions beyond the standard DOC permit.
