Great Barrier Forest Conservation Area

Ordinary8,148 haPermit: Restricted

Great Barrier Forest Conservation Area is an 8,148 ha block — the largest piece of public hunting country on Great Barrier Island (Aotea) in the Hauraki Gulf. Elevations run from near sea level up to 499 m with a median of 140 m, placing the bulk of the block in lowland and foothill bush.

Aspect leans south, with strong shares also facing north-east, east and south-west. The block carries subtropical island bush characteristic of Aotea — kanuka, broadleaf and regenerating canopy across a network of ridges and gully systems.

Wild pig is the only listed species. Great Barrier carries its own dynamics — the island has no deer at all, and pigs are the focus.
