Tapuarau Lagoon Conservation Area

Ordinary218 haPermit: Restricted

Tapuarau Lagoon Conservation Area is a small 218 ha block sitting at near sea level — elevations run from -1 m to just 22 m, with the median ground only 5 m above the tide. This is flat coastal wetland and lagoon country, not bush hill country.

Aspect leans south and south-west on the small amount of relief that exists. There are no tops, no bush spurs, and no climbing — this is open low-relief ground around a lagoon system.

Game on the permit is an unusual combination: red deer, fallow deer, sambar and wild goat. Sambar in the Manawatu-Wanganui-Taranaki coastal country is one of the few populations in New Zealand, and a block this size and shape calls for very specific tactics — patient watching from edges rather than walking hunting.
