Remarkables
The Remarkables is a 25,897 ha block in the Central Otago and The Remarkables permit area, covering the bulk of the range east of Queenstown. Elevations run from 372 m on the lower lake faces to 2,291 m on the tops, with a median of 1,503 m. Seventy-nine per cent of the country sits above the 1,200 m bushline and 50% in true alpine ground.
This is predominantly alpine country — the Remarkables are a classic steep-tops range with broad open faces, rocky basins and snow tussock above the bushline. The block leans east, so morning sun catches the country well and the warm sidles fire up early. Vertical relief of nearly 2,000 m on a single block gives options through any day.
Game on the permit is red deer, fallow deer, chamois, wild goat and wild pig. The Remarkables are best known for chamois on the open faces, with deer and goats on the lower bush-and-scrub margins.

Access & getting there
Helicopter access is permitted across the block, and Wild Animal Recovery Operations (WARO) are also permitted, so commercial helicopters may be working the open faces.
Two DOC huts sit inside the block in the Remarkables Conservation Area — Racemans Hut (non-flush toilet, stream water) and Two Mile Hut (heating, mattresses, stream water). Both are not bookable, so it's first-in for any party using them.
