Ongarue Scenic Reserve
Ongarue Scenic Reserve is a small 126 ha block in the Manawatu-Wanganui region, taken out under the Pureora Forest Park and surrounds permit area. Elevations run from about 273 m up to 434 m, with a median around 385 m, so it sits as lowland to mid-altitude bush country well below the bushline.
The block has a southerly lean, with about a quarter of the country facing south, a fifth facing north and useful shares also dropping south-west. Easterly aspects are limited. That gives a workable mix of shaded southerly and warm northerly sidles depending on wind.
Game on the permit includes red deer and wild pig. It is a focused short-stalk block on the edge of the wider Pureora deer country.
