North Opuha

Ordinary1,805 haPermit: Permitted

North Opuha is a 1,805 hectare Canterbury block in the Te Kahui Kaupeka country, covering a mix of bush and tops. Elevations run from 745 m up to 1,994 m, with a median elevation of 1,053 m. 34% of the block sits above the bushline and 16% is true alpine country above 1,500 m, so this is a genuine mix of bush and tops with real scope to work either zone.

Slopes lean south, with strong south-east, south-west and west aspects. With most of the block on shaded faces, feed and cover hold well through the day, which makes for productive glassing conditions on the open tops and reliable stalking through the bush faces.

The permit covers red deer, fallow deer, tahr, chamois and wallaby — a strong species mix for a compact block, including the South Canterbury wallaby presence.

What you can hunt here

Access & getting there

Spurs Hut sits inside the Te Kahui Kaupeka Conservation Park boundary on the block and provides heating, mattresses, non-flush toilets and stream water. The hut is not bookable, so it is first-in, first-served. It gives a workable base for hunters wanting to operate from a fixed point and push out onto the surrounding faces day by day.

The block is open to air access but is not flagged for WARO. With a foot-accessible hut and a wide range of country in a relatively small footprint, this block suits hunters wanting a focused multi-day trip without a long fly-in commitment.
