Hinds Tarn is a 1,208 ha balloted Roar block in the South Westland - Weheka permit area. Elevations climb from 426 m on the lower edges to 2,615 m on the tops, with a median around 1,219 m.
This is predominantly alpine country — 51% of the block sits above the 1,200 m bushline and 34% pushes into ground above 1,500 m. The dominant aspect is south, so the main faces stay shaded for much of the day.
It carries red deer, tahr and chamois, with the alpine species on the high faces and reds in the lower bush.
