The block is a mix of bush and tops, with around 28% of the country above the 1,200 m bushline. The dominant aspect is south-west, so the main faces sit shaded and into the prevailing weather.

It holds red deer, tahr and chamois, spread between the bush, the bluffs and the upper faces.

Access & getting there

Air access is not permitted on this block, so parties walk in from the lower Moeraki. WARO is permitted on the block.

Middle Head Hut sits within the block in the Haast, Paringa and Moeraki rivers area, with heating, mattresses, a non-flush toilet and water from the stream. It's not bookable — plan around the chance other parties are already there.
