42 - Mueller River

Balloted Roar block6,500 haPermit: Permitted

Block 42 - Mueller River is a 6,500 ha balloted roar block in the South Westland - Weheka permit area, sitting high in the Mueller catchment. Elevations run from 200 m on the valley floor to 2,055 m on the divide, with a median of 1,118 m.

With 44% of the block above the 1,200 m bushline and 21% above the 1,500 m alpine line, this is mostly above the bushline country — open tussock, scree, head basins and bluffs broken up by bush on the lower faces. Slopes lean east on the dominant aspect, so morning sun lights up the catchments.

The block carries red deer, tahr and chamois. The mix of bush-edge for deer and serious alpine ground for tahr and chamois makes this a strong all-round combination on the South Westland ballot.
