Tongariro National Park (Part)

Ordinary79,029 haPermit: Permitted

Tongariro National Park (Part) covers a vast 79,029 ha section of the volcanic plateau of Tongariro National Park. This is high-elevation country east of the main road network, with tussock, scoria and scree giving way to bush on the lower edges. Elevations run from about 572 m up to 2769 m, with a median sample around 1151 m.

Much of the block sits above the bushline, so expect open tussock tops and exposed faces alongside the bush margins.

Game on the permit includes red deer, sika, wild goat and wild pig. Sika are the prized animal across the wider Pureora and central plateau country, and adjacent blocks carry strong populations. The scale of the block lets parties spread out and work several drainages over a longer trip.
