Tarawera Conservation Area is a 1,254-hectare block in the Hawkes Bay Conservation Areas permit area, sitting in the inland Hawke's Bay hill country south of the Napier–Taupo road. Elevations run from 549 m to 1,094 m with a median of 752 m, so this is hill country country well below the bushline.
Aspects are well spread, with a south-east lean and significant south, east and north-east faces. Expect bush-clad ridges and broken gully systems typical of the Tarawera country between the Kaweka and Ahimanawa ranges.
The block carries red deer, sika and wild pig, placing it on the southern shoulder of the wider Kaweka–Kaimanawa sika range.
