Southern Abel Tasman National Park

Ordinary18,453 haPermit: Permitted

Southern Abel Tasman National Park covers 18,453 hectares from the southern boundary of the park north toward Bark Bay and the inland ridge country. Elevations run from sea level to 1,147 m with a median of 579 m, putting most of the block in the lowland and foothill bush bracket.

None of the block sits above the 1,200 m bushline — this is bush hunting country, not tops work. The country is dominated by an east-facing aspect, with coastal beech and broadleaf bush, granite ridges and the inland country running up toward Pikikiruna and the Marble Hill.

The block carries red deer, fallow deer, wild goat and wild pig. Fallow are an established feature of the inland bush in this part of the park, with reds present through the broader bush systems and pigs and goats spread through the lower country.
