Northern Abel Tasman National Park

Ordinary5,740 haPermit: Permitted

Northern Abel Tasman National Park covers 5,740 hectares of public conservation land at the northern end of the park, between Wainui Inlet and the headlands around Separation Point. Elevations run from sea level to 677 m with a median of just 152 m — lowland and foothill country in a coastal setting.

None of the block sits above the 1,200 m bushline, and the country is dominated by an east-facing aspect. Expect coastal beech and broadleaf bush, ridge spurs running down to the water, and granite headlands on the seaward edge.

The block carries red deer, wild goat and wild pig. The bush and scrub mosaic suits pig and goat hunting in particular, with reds present through the more enclosed bush sections.

What you can hunt here

Access & getting there

Air access is not permitted in Abel Tasman National Park, in line with national park rules. WARO is also not permitted, so the country sees no commercial helicopter activity.

Access is by foot or, more practically, by boat — water taxis run along the Abel Tasman coastline from Marahau, Kaiteriteri and Totaranui, and the Abel Tasman Coast Track provides walking access to many of the bays. Awapoto Hut sits inland from the coast and is the main hut serving this part of the park, with heating, mattresses, non-flush toilet and tap water (untreated — boil before use). It is not bookable for hunting purposes — confirm current status before relying on it.

Northern Abel Tasman National Park is an Ordinary permit area with Permitted hunt status. A standard DOC hunting permit covers year-round hunting, but national park rules apply and the popularity of the Coast Track means hunters must take particular care over routes, timing and firearm handling around walkers. Check the latest DOC information for any seasonal restrictions, especially around the Great Walk corridor.
