Rees Valley

Ordinary5,982 haPermit: Permitted

Rees Valley is a 5,982 ha block in Mount Aspiring National Park east of the divide, north of Glenorchy. Elevations climb from 520 m on the valley floor to 2,752 m on the tops, with a median of 1,452 m. Sixty-seven per cent of the country sits above the 1,200 m bushline, with 47% in true alpine ground.

This is predominantly alpine country — long open faces, hanging basins and steep upper slopes rising out of valley-floor beech and matagouri. The block leans east, so morning sun catches it cleanly for first-light glassing. Vertical relief of more than 2,200 m on a single block gives plenty of options through a trip.

Game on the permit is red deer, white-tail, chamois and wild goat. White-tail in a Mount Aspiring drainage is a notable feature, and the alpine chamois country is some of the most accessible east of the divide.
