Mt Burke Creek
Mt Burke Creek is an 894 ha Roar block above Lake Wanaka. Elevations climb from 358 m at the lake edge to 1,442 m on the tops, with a median of 960 m. Fifteen per cent of the country sits above the 1,200 m bushline, and there is no true alpine ground above 1,500 m.
This is a mix of bush and tops country but weighted firmly to the lower faces — beech and scrub running up from the lake with a band of open tussock on the higher ridges. The block leans south-east, so morning sun catches the faces early.
Game on the permit is red deer, chamois, wild pig and wallaby. The wallaby presence is uncommon for the wider district and gives a useful second species for parties working the bush margins.
