Mount Peel/ Waikari Hills
Mount Peel/Waikari Hills covers 3,264 hectares of foothill country on the eastern flank of the Southern Alps in mid Canterbury. Elevations run from 270 m at the lower margins to 1,704 m at the summit, with a median of 943 m. Twenty per cent of the block sits above the 1,200 m bushline and only 2% is alpine — predominantly bush and foothill country with a fringe of tops.
The block leans east-facing, with significant east, north-east and north aspects. Warmer sunny faces here open onto tussock above the bushline, with mixed beech and scrub on the lower slopes.
Four species are listed: red deer, tahr, chamois and wild pig. The vertical range from low bush up to the top of Peel gives a varied trip in compact country.
