Minor Peak
Minor Peak is a 1,067 ha block in the Mount Creighton permit area, west of Lake Wakatipu. Elevations run from 652 m on the lower faces to 2,102 m on the summit ridges, with a median of 1,332 m and 66% of the block above the 1,200 m bushline.
Thirty-one per cent of the country sits in true alpine ground above 1,500 m, so this is a mix of bush and tops grading into open tussock and rock on the upper guts. The dominant aspect is west, putting most of the country into afternoon sun and shading the morning glassing faces — useful information for parties planning a stalk.
The permit covers red deer, fallow deer, chamois and wild goat. The combination of bush-edge for deer and high faces for chamois on a single small block is unusual, and the size makes it a one or two-party block rather than a big-country mission.
