Hall Range

Ordinary9,132 haPermit: Permitted

The Hall Range is a 9,132 hectare Canterbury block dominated by alpine and sub-alpine country. Elevations climb from 806 m at the lower edges to 2,413 m on the highest tops, with a median elevation of 1,623 m. 86% of the block sits above the bushline and 62% is true alpine country above 1,500 m — this is a predominantly alpine block, and most of your hunting will be done on the tops.

The range is dominated by west-facing slopes, with a meaningful share of south-west and east aspects to fall back on. West-facing tops in this country dry out and warm up through the afternoon, so timing your glassing for early morning or last light pays off, and the shaded south-west sidles are worth working when the sun is on the main faces.

Game on the permit includes red deer, fallow deer, tahr and chamois. The mix of species and the high country make this a strong block for hunters chasing alpine animals.

What you can hunt here

Access & getting there

Middle Gorge Hut sits inside the Godley Peaks Conservation Area part of the block and provides heating, mattresses, non-flush toilets and stream water. The hut is not bookable, so it is first-in, first-served and worth having a tent as a back-up.

The block is open to air access and is flagged for WARO. With so much of the country sitting above 1,500 m and the dominant aspect facing west, helicopter operations are a real factor on the open tops — be aware of activity before committing to a glassing point or a long sidle across exposed faces.
