Dead Horse Creek

Ordinary1,899 haPermit: Restricted

Dead Horse Creek is a 1,899-hectare public hunting block in Otago, within the Mount Creighton permit area on the Wakatipu side of Otago. Elevations run from about 539 m up to 1830 m with a median around 962 m, putting most of the ground in a mix of bush and tops.

Around 24% of the block pushes above the 1,200 m bushline, giving hunters a useful mix of beech or scrub edges and open tops to glass. Slopes lean south-east-facing, which shapes where sun, snow and feeding animals concentrate through the day.

Recorded game on the block includes red deer, fallow deer, chamois and wild goat. Reds work the bush and lower sidles while chamois sit higher on the open faces and tops. It is steep faces above Lake Wakatipu rather than open inland tussock.
