Chetwynd Conservation Area
The Chetwynd Conservation Area is a Canterbury block of roughly 610 hectares, made up of more than one polygon of country. Elevations run from about 471 m up to 1,317 m, with a median of 987 m, so this is mid-altitude foothill country that brushes against the bushline in places.
Only 9% of sampled ground sits above the 1,200 m bushline, so the block is mostly below the tops, with a small fringe of higher faces. Slopes lean predominantly south, with strong shares of south-east, north-east and east faces, giving shaded sidles and gully systems that hold cover and feed.
Game on the permit includes red deer, fallow deer, chamois and wallaby. The mix of species reflects this country's place on the eastern foothills.
