Takitimu Conservation Area including adjacent PCL is a 46,232-hectare hunting block in the Takitimu/Snowdon/Mavora/Eyre permit area in northern Southland. Elevations run from about 238 m to 1,637 m, with a median around 848 m.

The country here is a mix of bush and tops, with roughly 17% of the block above the 1,200 m bushline and slopes that lean east. These ranges sit east of Te Anau and carry the classic Southland mix of beech valleys feeding up into tussock tops.

The block carries red deer, fallow deer, wild goat and wild pig.

Access & getting there

Helicopter access is permitted on Takitimu Conservation Area, useful for getting into country that would otherwise be a long valley walk from the nearest road. WARO is also permitted, so expect commercial helicopter activity at times.
