Ribbonwood Conservation Area
Ribbonwood Conservation Area is a 2,454 ha public hunting block in the Canterbury permit area. Elevations run from 783 m on the valley floors up to 1,725 m on the tops, with a median of 1,289 m.
This is mostly above the bushline — 64% of the ground sits above 1,200 m and 20% pushes into true alpine country above 1,500 m. The block carries open tussock tops, shrubland and broken ground, with shaded shrub gullies below. Slopes lean south, so the dominant aspect carries the cooler shaded faces.
The species mix is red deer, tahr and chamois. With most of the block above the bushline at a manageable size, Ribbonwood is a strong option for glassing-style hunts targeting tahr and chamois alongside reds on the bush edges.
