Remarkables (Central Otago)
Remarkables (Central Otago) is a 4,313 ha RHA in the Central Otago and The Remarkables permit area, on the eastern faces of the Remarkables Range. Elevations climb from 772 m on the lower faces to 1,704 m on the tops, with a median of 1,110 m. Forty-three per cent of the country sits above the 1,200 m bushline and 11% in true alpine ground.
This is a mix of bush and tops, with tussock-and-scrub country on the lower faces grading into rock and short alpine herbfield on the upper ridges. The block leans east, so the morning sun lights it well — useful for picking animals on the warm sidles early in the day.
Game on the permit is red deer, chamois and wild goat. The Remarkables east-side country is well known for chamois on the rocky faces, with reds and goats on the lower bush-and-scrub margins.
