Mt Grey/Maukatere
Mt Grey/Maukatere is a 1,288 ha public hunting block in the Canterbury permit area. Elevations run from 273 m at the bottom up to 930 m on the top, with a median of 582 m.
This is lowland foothill country — well below the bushline, with no alpine ground. The block is mid-Canterbury hill country in bush and scrub cover, with slopes leaning south-west, so the dominant aspect carries the cooler shaded afternoon faces.
The species mix is red deer, chamois and wild pig. At this size and elevation it's a useful short-trip or day-hunt block close to the eastern foothills, with reds and pigs the realistic target species and chamois a less common option given the elevation.
