Mt Dick Hunting Area

Ordinary2,152 haPermit: Restricted

Mt Dick Hunting Area is a 2,152 ha block in the Takitimu/Snowdon/Mavora/Eyre permit area, in the rugged hill country at the southern edge of Otago. Elevations run from 308 m on the lower faces to 1,785 m on the tops, with a median of 992 m. A third of the block (33%) sits above the 1,200 m bushline and 10% in true alpine ground.

This is a mix of bush and tops, with beech and scrub in the lower drainages and open tussock and rock above. The dominant aspect is east, so morning sun catches the faces well — good for glassing first thing and finding bedded animals on the warm sidles.

Game on the permit is red deer, chamois and wild goat. The combination of bush-edge for deer and higher faces for chamois on one block makes it a flexible option for parties with a few days to spare.
