Long Gully

Roar3,844 haPermit: Restricted

Long Gully is a small 3,844 ha public hunting block within the Molesworth Station and Clarence grazing lease, on the inland Marlborough-Canterbury boundary country. Elevations run from around 680 m on the valley ground up to 1,684 m, with a median of about 1,030 m.

It works as a mix of bush and tops — roughly 29% of the block sits above the 1,200 m bushline, and just 3% is above 1,500 m. Country is typical of the inland east-coast ranges: tussock and shrubland faces, scattered bush in the gullies, and tops that are open but rarely true alpine. Slopes lean north-west, so the block carries warm, drier faces and dries out fast through summer.

It holds red deer, chamois and wild pig. For a hunter willing to handle the restricted-access setup, this is a compact roar block with a balanced species mix.

What you can hunt here

This is a roar — the red deer roar peaks from late March into April, and competition for the block is highest then.

Access & getting there

Air access is permitted (fixed-wing and helicopter), which is the practical way into a block of this kind given the surrounding pastoral lease. WARO is also permitted, so commercial helicopters may be working in the same country.

There are no huts on the block. Parties will need to fly camp or carry a tent for any overnight trip.

Permits & rules

You need a DOC hunting permit to hunt this block. It is classed as a Roar block in the Molesworth Station and Clarence grazing lease permit area, with a hunting status of Restricted.

Commercial wild-animal recovery (WARO) operates over this area — expect helicopter activity and pressured game.

This block sits within a DOC air-access zone — fly-in hunting and helicopter drop-offs may be permitted.

A DOC hunting permit is required, and Long Gully is a Roar block with a Restricted hunting status. That means access during the roar period is allocated through a balloted-roar process rather than the standard permit system — successful applicants draw exclusive use of the block for a defined period. Outside the balloted roar window, access may be tied to the pastoral lease arrangements over Molesworth Station and Clarence; check DOC's current rules before planning a trip.

1080 & pesticide status

  • Pesticide (1080 or similar) has been laid in or near this block — check current dog and carcass restrictions before you hunt.
