Jollie-Cass

Ordinary5,799 haPermit: Permitted

Jollie-Cass is a 5,799 hectare Canterbury block of high alpine country. Elevations start at 1,140 m and climb to 2,802 m on the highest peaks, with a median elevation of 1,944 m. 99% of the block sits above the bushline and 90% is true alpine country above 1,500 m — this is a predominantly alpine block, with almost no bush cover at all.

Slopes lean south-east, with a strong share of east, south and west aspects rounding out the country. In this kind of high tussock and rock country, hunters spend most of their time glassing from spurs and basins rather than stalking in cover. Shaded south-east faces hold animals through the day, while east-facing slopes warm up first and are worth a look at first light.

Game on the permit includes red deer, tahr and chamois. With elevations pushing past 2,800 m, this block is firmly in tahr and chamois territory and rewards hunters comfortable moving through steep alpine terrain.

What you can hunt here

Access & getting there

There are no huts or campsites recorded inside the block, so plan for a fly-camp or work in from a vehicle access point on the margins. With 90% of the country above 1,500 m, this is steep, exposed terrain and a tent or bivy that can handle alpine weather is essential.

The block is open to air access and is flagged for WARO, so helicopter operations are likely on the tops and in the big basins. Check current activity before committing to a sidle across exposed faces and be conscious of helicopter movements when you are out on the open country.
