Jollie Brook

Ordinary22,056 haPermit: Permitted

Jollie Brook is a 22,056 ha public hunting block in Lake Sumner Forest Park, north Canterbury. Elevations run from around 390 m up to 1,629 m, with a median of about 900 m, putting most of the ground in beech bush rather than on the tops.

It sits as a mix of bush and tops, but leaning bush-heavy — only about 12% of the block is above the 1,200 m bushline, and there's essentially no true alpine ground above 1,500 m. The country is the classic Lake Sumner mix of beech-clad valleys, river flats and lower tops, with the higher ground concentrated on the ridges between the larger streams. Dominant aspect is west.

The block carries red deer, chamois and wild pig. This is fundamentally a beech-bush hunt — well-suited to hunters who like sidling, calling and stalking rather than long-glassing from open tops.

What you can hunt here

Access & getting there

Air access is permitted, including helicopters, which can drop parties at suitable spots near the upper streams to save a long walk in. WARO is also permitted, so commercial helicopter activity is possible.

Four huts serve hunters in the block, all in Lake Sumner Forest Park. Cold Stream Hut and Jolliebrook Hut both have heating, mattresses, non-flush toilets and stream water (not treated — boil before use). Glenrae Hut has mattresses and a non-flush toilet without heating. Gabriel Hut has heating, a non-flush toilet and stream water but no listed mattresses. None of the huts are bookable, so parties should plan for the possibility of sharing or carrying a fly.
